Tips to encourage your children to participate in Extracurricular Activities

All study and no play makes Jack a dull man. Only academics do not ensure the all-round development encompassing your child’s brain, personality and psychological aspects. It is important to let your children loose sometimes and let them enjoy activities without any judgements or pressure.

The importance of physical and other creative activities has been acknowledged by Vidhyashram. We have incorporated a lot of activities in our school curriculum to make sure that the children are regularly engaged in fun activities and let their creative juices out. Such extra-curricular activities also help children to find their hobbies and develop a passion which might open doors to career opportunities for them in the future.

However, one significant challenge in these activities is to encourage more and more children to participate. It has been observed that the participation level of these nonacademics activities is getting low as the students are more inclined towards technology and pedagogical activities. Other than teachers, the parents can play a huge role in encouraging their wards to participate in more non scholastic activities at school.

Let us see how this can be done smoothly.

  • Understand their interests

It is essential to understand what your child really enjoys doing. The only way to find this is to engage them in more vivid activities. It is also important to make the children realise the same.

  • Making activities fun and engaging

If the activities are engaging enough, the children will definitely find them fun and would want to participate again. It is also essential that they are hyped up before beginning the activities and told about all the fun that they are going to have. This will make them excited and potentially increase the participation ratio.

  • Introduce Rewards

It is seen that the children are more likely to engage in extra-curricular activities if they know that they will be rewarded at the end of it. Hence, let your students know about the rewards that they are going to get after they are done with the activity to make them more interested in participation. Moreover, it should be ensured that these rewards are not harmful for them, such as sugary candies, video games, etc. It is smarter to reward them with colouring books, crayons, pens, etc.

  • Participate with them

The children will always find an activity more exciting if their parents or teachers are doing it with them, rather than just telling them what to do. Children would look up to you as a pro on the activity and attempt to replicate you by trying harder to do well on it.

  • Understand their limits

It is essential that you understand your child’s limits, whether physical, emotional or educational. If you ask your child to sit in front of a bowl full of candies without touching them, they would probably fail. If you give them math problems to solve, they won’t find it interesting. If your activities involve too much physical work, they might get tired soon. Make sure that your activities are designed to fit them well and keep them engaged for longer. Allow them to finish those activities so that they feel a sense of accomplishment.

  • Let them loose

Do not set too many rules and restrictions on the activities. For example, if it is a drawing competition, do not give them very specific instructions on what they need to draw. Don’t ask them to draw an apple, rather allow them to draw their favourite fruits. Letting your children loose will help them to reveal their true creativity, and they might actually enjoy doing it more.

  • Spice it up

Try to make your activities more exciting with the help of colours, music, art and craft, child-safe equipment, etc. Add more things that the children love to do. For example, if the activity is to make clay objects, allow them to use multiple colours and other crafting objects. You can ask them to tell a poem or song about the object that they are making out of clay. This will make things more engaging and creative for them.

It is also crucial that you also have fun with the children. Believe it or not, if you are genuinely having fun while engaging in various activities with the children, they will enjoy it more. It will become a playful session for them, and you will never have to push them for something in the future. The key is to make the activities fun and enjoyable while focusing on their benefits for them.
