6 Fun Word Games For Kids

Word games help to build your child’s literacy skills and creative thinking and help in boosting their language skills. These games will open up their minds and understand the world around them. Also, some simple and fun games can allow a break from the monotony. You can play these games when there’s nothing to do, on long rides, when you and your child are bored at night, or even while running errands. It’s an entertaining way to spend time with your kids and family during the weekends or vacations while teaching them how amazing word games can be.

Hangman

Hangman is a really fun word game played between 2 players. It’s a word-guessing game where a stick-man is hung unless the other player is able to guess the word right. 

No. of Players Required: 2 players

How to Play

You need 2 players for this game. You will require a sheet of paper and you have to draw a gallowon it. Let’s say you’re Player 1, who is the puzzle giver, then, you have to think of a word and draw dashes to represent the word; hence the number of dashes is equal to the number of alphabets in the word. NOTE: Proper nouns and slang words are not allowed. Let the second player guess each letter of that new word. Every time they guess each letter wrong, you draw the arms, legs, and head of the stickman; every wrong answer will lead to the creation of one new body part. When the stickman is complete, Player 2 loses unless they guess the word right and save him.

Word Rhyming

This is a fun word game that can be played by toddlers. It involves saying words that rhyme which is an easy way to build vocabulary. 

No. of Players Required:  2 to 4 players

How to Play

Player 1 starts the game with a word, and player 2 has to say words that rhyme with that word. For example, if you say hat, they should say cat, bat, mat etc. And the Player 2 keeps going until they run out of words, and then you proceed to the next player.

I Spy

I Spy is one of the best word games for kindergarten kids, as it’s fun, simple, and requires nothing but your creativity and strong imagination power. 

No. of Players Required: 2 players

How to Play

Player 1 has to spot something and tell Player 2 what the letter begins with, and then they have to try to guess what you’re peeping. 

Suppose you spot a sock while peeping, so you have to say the sentence – “I spy with my little eye, something beginning with S____” and Player 2 has to guess the word from the given first letter.

Unscramble My Words

Unscramble My Words is a word game that allows your child to put on their thinking caps and put their problem solving and critical thinking skills to the test.

No. of Players Required: 2 to 3 players

How to Play

You need to think of a word and write down each letter on paper. Except there’s a twist, you will scramble the words and then write it on the paper, scrambling them, and your kids will have to unscramble it and get the word right.

The Story Game

This is a great game that encourages kids to build new worlds with words. Let’s see how to play this so get your creativity pumping.

How to Play

Player 1 starts a sentence, and Player 2 has to continue the story.

For example, Tom went to the vegetable market. Player 2: And he saw a giant elephant near the market. Player 3: And the elephant was eating a lot of bananas. 

So, this is how the story will build up, and different ideas will make the stories pan out hilarious.

Words Within a Word

Parents have hailed words within a word as one of the top word-building games for kids. It teaches little ones how to spell while building up their vocabulary as well.

No. of Players Required:  2-3 players or more

How to Play

Think of a long word, for example – ORANGE. Your kid will have to make a list of words starting with every letter of the given word, like, (ox, rat, ant, net, gate, eat), except they must be shorter than your word’s length.

I’m Going on a Picnic

I’m going on a picnic is a word game that challenges your child’s memory while testing their vocabulary. It’s truly fun and unique.

No. of Players Required: 2-3 players

How to Play

The Player 1 begins with, I’m going on a picnic, and I will bring a popsicle. The Player 2 adds on to the sentence by saying, I’m going on a picnic, and I will bring popsicles and sandwiches. The sentence gets expanded turn by turn, until the final player is unable to recall the list of items added to it.
