Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
Founded in Bangalore in the south-western state of Karnataka in 1909, the Indian Institute of Science is ranked as the best institute in India.
The university offers only one undergraduate programme: a four-year BA in science. The programme’s core modules are physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and humanities. In their final year, students do an individual research project. In order to apply to this course students have to provide their scores from one of the national examinations of India.
The university is heavily focused on research, with about 70 per cent of its student body undertaking PhD and MA research projects. The institute claims more than 75 winners of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
Jawaharlal Nehru University was ranked number two among the top universities in India by NIRF, while it also ranks in the top 10 institutions in India. The university has a student base of 3,496 people and ranks high on graduate outcomes.
It has received the Best University Award from the President of India in 2017. The University is known for churning out some of India’s prominent thinkers, intellectuals, diplomats, and artists. Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
Banaras Hindu University is an internationally reputed temple of learning, situated in the holy city of Varanasi. It was ranked 3rd by the NIRF University ranking in 2020. The University family consists of about 15000 students belonging to all streams of life, castes and religions and races, about 1700 teachers, and nearly 8000 non-teaching staff.
The university has taken a leadership role in promoting new ideas, the spirit of integration of the world, and cultivation of intellect and culture. Banaras Hindu University has many prominent alumni and faculty, including Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance author Robert M. Pirsig, who studied Eastern philosophy and culture there. One of BHU’s administrators, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, went on to become the President of India.
