How to Improve Concentration & Focus of Primary School Children?

Concentration is considered as the key to many activities in children, such as learning new things, memorizing what they study, and much more. However, concentrating on important things is not an easy thing to do not only for children but also for adults.

To increase the concentration power in young children, during their primary schooling is very crucial. They can get distracted very easily and find it challenging to focus both during class and at home. Undoubtedly, children are naturally energetic, but sometimes their energy leads them to become inattentive.

The good thing is that the concentration power in children can be improved with skills for focus and self-control. If your child finds it tough to focus and fixate, it is not a disability. It’s just that they don’t practice some essential skills.

How to Improve Concentration in Children

  • Play games that improve focus

Games are considered as one of the most effective tools to improve concentration power in children.

Rather than keeping them stuck into gadgets and electronic devices, make them play with regular toys. Several studies suggest that mobile phones and gadgets negatively impact the focus and attention span. Replace these things with games that make them think and focus. Following are some examples of good games for concentration power in kids:

  • Sequencing
  • Spot the difference
  • Tongue Twisters
  • What’s missing?
  • Create a distraction-free environment

Not all environments are the same for the kids. Some of them may concentrate better in a calm and soothing environment, while others may not find it suitable. You have to understand what’s right for your kid and in what location do they find it easier to focus. It is the first step in boosting their concentration level.

You can set the ambience for kids with some soft instrumental music to calm their nerves. In the room where they study, try to get rid of musical instruments, mobile phones, televisions, computers, etc.

The material they need while studying like pen, pencil, notebooks, textbooks, etc. should be kept at a reachable distance. If they get up from their seat every now and then, it will cause distraction.

  • Healthy and green food

Eating green and healthy food has a direct connection with improving concentration power. Today there are several types of food products available to fulfil the deficiency of proper nutrition in kids.

Generally, the kids don’t like healthy food. They are more inclined towards fast foods, chocolates, wafers, and other junk foods. However, these kinds of eatables aren’t rich in nutrients that boost concentration and memory power. Almonds, pulses, and other eatables that are protein-rich are good for the brain and should be incorporated in their meals regularly.

Moreover, the caffeine intake in children must be reduced or avoided because it provides unhealthy doses of food and drains down their energy levels. Fruits and veggies work as antioxidants and help in boosting memory power.

  • Sound sleep and naps

Children need at least eight hours of regular sleep at night. Many kids nowadays sleep late because of gadgets or televisions. However, this is not good for their minds and overall health. As a parent, you must ensure that they go to bed on time and rest properly.

Additionally, allow them to nap for an hour in the afternoon when they are back from school. It refreshes their minds and is an excellent trick to improve concentration.

  • Break big tasks into smaller ones

Another helpful tip to improve children’s concentration level is to help them divide big tasks into smaller ones. For instance, if they are studying a full chapter in one go, it can be challenging for them to concentrate. But if  you break it down into smaller portions, they will feel encouraged and find it easier to focus.

Wrapping Up:

These are some of the best tips to improve concentration of children in primary schools. It becomes a responsibility of the parents to ease their workload, create a distraction-free environment, take care of their diet, and ensure that they sleep properly.
